In 2015, Ceremony Coffee Roasters- the Annapolis, MD-based purveyor of coffee and professional coffee equipment- was looking to expand into the Baltimore region. SM+P Architects was hired to design the new flagship location in West Mt. Vernon, adjacent to a new residential and market project in a former warehouse. The 3,000sf space- originally a cafeteria for the warehouse- was conceived as a bright white shell with accents of douglas fir. The center of the space is dominated by the coffee service area, which is comprised of two 13’-6”L blackened steel transaction counters paired with custom millwork counters to house coffee brewing equipment. An adjacent “Pro Shop” area displays equipment and goods for purchase. On axis with the coffee counters, the rear of the space terminates with a glass-enclosed teaching lab where Ceremony hosts guest “cuppings”, as well as training for local baristas and restaurateur’s looking to up their game and their coffee programs.
